uku Research Methods in English Language and Applied Linguistics (A How-to Guide) Comprised of five chapters, this book entitled Research Methods in English Language and Applied Linguistics: A How-To Guide delivers a helpful guidance on conducting research in English and linguistic field. In Chapter 1, the problem of carrying out a case study in educational studies is investigated and addressed, including the various case study design types and any misunderstandings regarding case studies in educational research. In Chapter 2, the issue of conducting action research is addressed. Not only the challenge of conducting classroom action research is discussed, but also effective suggestions on how to implement it is offered. In Chapter 3, Critical Discourse Analysis and its implementation in foreign language teaching is explored. The stages of conducting CDA research were thoroughly elaborated. The chapter emphasises the significance of understanding that ideology in CDA is also related to social position, political interests, and the influence of power in society. The issue of conducting a needs analysis for ESP courses is explored in Chapter 4, including the advantages of using mixed-method research and also the possible research instruments for need analysis. The topic of Conversational Analysis and its function in studying social interaction between men and women becomes the focus of Chapter 5, where the importance of conducting gender-based Conversational Analysis is also explained. The chapter concludes that Conversation Analysis research can contribute to understanding social phenomena in everyday life. Thus, this book offers an attempt to create a helpful resource for students, their advisors, and researchers that would help in making practical decisions on research design, selection of theoretical approach, methods of data processing, and result interpretations.
